Cisco is introducing an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) router in the Cisco 1000 series of inexpensive, easy-to- install and manage, multiprotocol access products. The Cisco 1004 ISDN router has an ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) port with an integrated Network Termination 1 (NT1) device, thus reducing the number of devices required to connect to ISDN in North America. The Cisco 1004 connects small, remote sites with Ethernet LANs to wide-area networks using ISDN at speeds up to 128 kbps; with 4: 1 data compression, raw throughput speeds of 512 kbps are possible. The Cisco 1004 has a built-in ISDN BRI port with an integrated NT1, a 10BaseT Ethernet port, a console port, and an external Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) slot for an optional Flash ROM card. This "plug-and-play" product is designed to be installed easily by nontechnical personnel at remote sites. The Cisco 1004 ISDN router extends Cisco's range of ISDN scalable solutions.The Cisco 1004 includes all the features of the highly popular Cisco 1003 ISDN router and adds an integrated NT1 to the ISDN BRI port. Therefore, the Cisco 1004 is appropriate for use in North America, where customers normally supply the NT1. The Cisco 1004 supports two different feature sets of the acclaimed Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) software. One set includes IP routing and transparent bridging; the other contains IP, IPX, and AppleTalk routing plus transparent bridging. Both feature sets support Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), compression, dial-on-demand routing (DDR), and a host of other powerful features for optimizing WAN bandwidth and costs. The Cisco 1004 ISDN router broadens the range of WAN options supported by the Cisco 1000 series routers.
