The synchronous interface attaches the BN router to digital communications equipment (DCE), such as digital service units/channel service units (DSUs/CSUs). The Synchronous interface supports a flexible cabling scheme to provide a range of physical connections, including V.35, RS-232, RS-449/422 balances, RS-530, and X.21. Synchronous interfaces operate at up to 6 Mbps, allowing use of leased lines up to T1 and E1 rates.

Synchronous interface can be configured to integrate IBM SDLC traffic by connecting local or remote IBM equipment directly to the interface and using Data Link Switching (DLSw) for Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC), BSC Pass-Through, or Transparent Synchronous Pass-Through.
